Currently you can see Ileana Mateescu as Hänsel at Theater Dortmund where she will also debut in the roles of Siebel in "Faust" (Gounod), 2.Dame in "Die Zauberflöte" (Mozart), Orlofsky in "Die Fledermaus" (J.Strauß) and in the Mezzosopran Part in "Einstein on the beach" (Ph. Glass) later this season.

Ms. Mateescu was awarded the Bajazzo Preis of the Theater- und Konzertfreunde Dortmund after a successful season 13/14 highlighted by two main role debuts: Carmen ("Carmen") and Angelina ("La Cenerentola").

During her postgraduate studies in Mainz, Ms. Mateescu became a member of the Oper Dortmund ensemble. Since her debut 2011-2012 season she has performed defining mezzosoprano roles such as Carmen in "Carmen", Angelina in "La Cenerentola", Octavian in "Der Rosenkavalier", Ottone in "L'Incoronazione di Poppea", Fjodor in "Boris Godunov", Cherubino in "Le Nozze di Figaro", Dorabella in "Cosi fan tutte", David in "Saul", Hänsel in "Hänsel and Gretel" (Humperdinck), Rinaldo in "Rinaldo" (Händel) and Ronja in "Ronja Räubertochter" (Arnecke).

Parallel to her operatic activity Ms. Mateescu is actively engaged in other avenues of vocal performance: oratorio, concert and art song. On the concert stage Ms. Mateescu has sung in Basel, Zürich and Wiesbaden in The Dream of Gerontius, in München in the Weihnachtsoratorium, in Mainz in the Theresienmesse, in Dortmund and Recklinghausen in the Petite Messe Solennelle and several times in Konzerthaus Dortmund in Bach's Johannespassion among others. She has also sung various solo recitals together with the pianist Hedayet Djeddikar.


Ms. Mateescu made her 2012 debuts at the Theater an der Wien in Vienna and at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in Paris performing the role of Anastasio in Vivaldi's "Il Giustino" under Stefano Molardi and the baroque orchestra Virtuosi delle Muse.

Ms. Mateescu joined the Junges Ensemble at the Staatstheater Mainz in 2008 where she made her first debuts on stage as Sibari in Gluck's "La Semiramide riconosciuta", Second Witch and Magician in Purcell's "Dido and Aeneas" and Amadigi in Handel's "Amadigi di Gaula" to much critical acclaim.  She has also appeared at the Theater Ulm as Ernesto in "Il Mondo della Luna" and at the Oper Frankfurt as Alcina in "Orlando furioso". In 2009 she participated in the Kammeroper Schloss Rheinsberg Festival where she sang the role of Filipievna from "Eugene Onegin".

She has worked with conductors such as Gabriel Feltz, Michael Hofstetter, Wolfram Koloseus, Stefano Molardi, Jac van Steen, Motonori Kobayashi, Fausto Nardi, Tiberiu Soare, Ari Rasilainen, Noam Zur, Andreas Henning, Michael Schneider, Michael Helmrath, Michael Millard and with such stage directors as Peer Boysen, Jens-Daniel Herzog, John Fulljames, Erik Petersen, Katharina Thoma, Johannes Schmid, Igor Folwill, Yuri Alexandrov, Arila Siegert, Ștefan Neagrău, Cristian Mihăilescu.

Ms. Mateescu is the winner of the 7th iteration of the biannual "Hilde Zadek International Singing Competition" and a winner of the international "Neustadter Meistersinger Voice Competition". She was also a finalist in the "Ernst Haefliger Singing Competition" in Switzerland and the "Klassikmania Vocal Competition".  

A native of Bucharest, Romania, Ms. Mateescu completed her Bachelor's in Music at the National University of Music in Bucharest, to include a year of study at the Mozarteum in Salzburg.  She completed her Master's and postgraduate Konzertexamen at the Musikhochschule in Mainz.
